The paper discusses the experience of a rural community in the Northern Delta for the past 13 years following the construction of two water conveyance dams which provide water for domestic and commercial purposes. The study has three main objectives: (1) to examine the impact of dam construction on daily aquatic life metrics of pond and stream species, (2) to assess the effects of dam construction on riverine benthic macroinvertebrate samples, and (3) to determine the potential for dam construction and water abstraction to degrade water quality in the study area. In order to achieve these objectives, we conducted benthic macroinvertebrate and fish trawl surveys in ponds and streams of both dam and non-dam areas before and during dam construction. This was complemented by analysis of the water quality parameters. The results of the studies are discussed below.
An effective strategy to address wastewater and solid waste management in India has been initiated in recent years through the setting up of a pilot sewage treatment plant (STPP) to reduce sludge production and to curb the deterioration of the quality of the treated water. This study focuses on assessing the environmental potential of various alternatives to the conventional STPP designs, i.e.
Water quality of China is not good, with many water bodies polluted by nitrate. A search of water quality related publications from the World Wide Web (www) gave 1,600 hits from published results of studies on water quality. Studies of the concentration of total dissolved solids (TDS) were found to be greatly affected by seasonal changes. It is necessary to investigate the changes in nitrate concentrations in soil and groundwater. The variation of nitrate concentration is likely due to fertilization of land by chemical fertilizer and other long-term anthropogenic activities. On this basis, a pot experiment was conducted with 7 groups of 4 each to investigate the influence of nitrate on tea cultivar seedlings of 'Wyeh' and 'No.15' 7211a4ac4a
